Hello all!
Next Friday Prof. John Herman from Virginia Commonwealth University will
be coming to give a talk on "Negotiating the Margin: The Ming Conquest
of Qian." It will be in New Cabell Hall, room 311 at 3pm.
Prof. Herman studies the history of late Imperial China, from the
sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. His present research interests focus
on Chinese state/society expansion into China's southwest frontier, the
present-day provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and southern Sichuan.
His just-released book from Harvard UP, "Amid the Clouds and Mist:
China's Colonization of Guizhou, 1200-1700" examines how China's three
late imperial dynasties - Yuan, Ming, and Qing - conquered, colonized,
and assumed control of the southwest. It also examines the indigenous
response to China's colonization.
Hope to see everyone there! We will have lemonade.
Best,
Graham
