Subject: Summer Chinese Language Institute, 2008

Hello everyone,

I am writing to request you to pass on the following information.

This summer, we are holding our second Summer Chinese Language Institute.
This will be the third summer I am teaching CHIN101 and 102 on grounds at
UVa. I have noticed that the summer intensive setting allows students to
become a better sponge for absorbing Chinese in the future. Students who
have finished CHIN101 and 102 with me in the last two years seem to retain
that edge into the future so much that they can easily meet the challenges
of CHIN201 and 202 and do really well. I have taught CHIN201 and 202 in
the past academic year, therefore, I am giving my account as a witness.
This summer, so far, we only have 6 students admitted into the program.
Four of them are graduate students from the Religious Studies Department in
one way or another. They will be studying Chinese Buddhism or using
Chinese for their research in China in the future. As someone coming from
Buddhist studies background, I am really excited and will be happy to give
them supplementary lessons on Buddhist Chinese. However, the Summer
Language Institute requires me to have at least 10 students to offer the
class, I am thus writing to you all to suggest to your students to consider
taking CHIN101 and 102 with Chinese Summer Language Institute this summer.

I appreciate you taking the time to assist me in this manner.

Sincerely,

Shu-chen Chen
