In Cage opinion Artist:
1. experiences the aesthetic satisfaction with the reality as it is, through submerging in the positive emptiness, being as being (Heidegger, Buddhism zen),
2. gives up his privileged status as a creator (anti-Wagner, anti-Schonberg),
3. avoids political structures and market mechanisms (anarchism),
4. does not take his art in terms of work but in terms of excess, superfluousness and luxuriance (Bataille),
Provided that his/her art:
5. is not expression of the artist’s personality (anonymous, impersonal art),
6. is not communication (anti-Adorno, anti-modernism),
7. calms down and relaxes (G. Sarabhai),
8. imitates nature in her manner of operations (Coomaraswamy),
9. is a kind of continuum (composition as a process) with no beginning, middle or end, like the sound continuum or weather (‘whether weather’)
10. is something absolutely new and unique each time it is performed (even if it is the same composition),
11. happens while being performed (indetermination),
12. does not reflect ideas but produces them (e.i. Cage’s mesostics),
13. does not assume a specific shape but remains a ‘nonthing’, not for sale (anti-consumerism),
14. reveals its content while getting in touch with the audience in an pre-verbal, pre-rational way (like Heidegger’s poetry of being),
15. is ‘knocking one’s head against a wall’, affirmation of life (in Nietzsche’s sense) but not the arts with its all variety and complexity (of sounds).

best regards,
jurek
