[silence] John Cage on iTunes

 Hi All,

Cage wasn't all that much for melody anyway, in fact I have heard it said
that he was pushed into his discipline out of a lack of melodic memory. I
feel he would not have cared too much for watered down mp3's with the
digital artifacts popping up that the artist never intended to be there.
IMHO, A man who celebrated silence would not be satisfied with noise that
mp3's generate, after all he was into the purity of environment to the point
of searching out anechoic chambers for the deep listening of his own self.

As for I-tunes? Well this is interesting and not quite a topic for a Cagean
discussion, but since we have brought it up....correct me if I am wrong, but
I-tunes was Apple's answer for the hurting music industry. They had the
infrastructure, the vision and saw the need for such a service, but!!! had
those whining babies that call themselves the music industry had been on top
of their business, they would have used the internet as 45 single records or
radio had been for them in the past...as a medium for the promotion of
artist's and their full works. I-tunes now has the power to dictate bitrate
and prices that seem outrageous to me, especially knowing how at 128kbs, you
are getting a quality that roughly approximates am and fm radio technology
that has been in place for well over 50 years! They have made the RIAA
happy, but I say give the RIAA death, along with it's gestapo like tactics
that are only a puppet for the music industry and their failed business
practices. My hope is that competitors force the issue further and further
into a much more liquid form of distribution, without hurting the artists CD
sales as some....( *qualified SOME*) artists really do deserve it... real
artists don't do what they do for money, they do it because they have do it.

Best Wishes,

Mark Ragsdale

P.S. Thanks to this forum, I was informed of John's One 11 and 103 DVD
release and received it here in S. Korea today! Can't wait to relax at home
meditatively watching with a hot cup of tea.
