[silence] digital cage

speaking of lossy digital compression artifacts.
had the chance to watch the new One11 DVD on mode.
its really beautiful. i really enjoyed it. i hope to see the original
film in a theatre someday too.
there are blocky digital artifacts all over the DVD from the DVD
compression / encoding, especially during the moments where there are
circular light patterns.
but there are also specks of dust and dirt and things from the
original analog film print too.
so we get analog and digital unintentional 'noise' on the DVD.
i guess thats what the film is about. there is no such thing as
silence in sight and sound.

van carlson and henning lohner talk about this during the bonus
interview at the end too.
about how different it is viewing the DVD vs. viewing the film
projected in a theatre.

my argument about the whole itunes thing is that the customer should
have a choice of quality when they are paying for a digital download.
the technologies for better quality are there, its easy to implement,
why not offer it. i guess offering CD quality downloads would really
put the record companies out of business.
im happy to pay more for a FLAC file or WAV / AIFF uncompressed file.
(in fact, smithsonian global sound offers both FLAC or mp3 for the
same price)
