I had the chance to see the film at the Cage conference at Mills in 1995...
I think (again) before everyone is so concenred about the pristine nature of prints, copies, this that and the other - keep in mind what Cage had to say about "Rauschenberg's white paintings" being "airports for dust and light." In other words, this would be fine by Cage - why isnt it fine by us?
Many of the people posting here seem to miss the point and take it all so seriously. If 4'33" taught us anything (maybe it didn't) it's that art is all over the place.
Does a VHS copy of a a John Ford picture make it less of a film? Does the light in a gallery "ruin" the art? Maybe among purists trying to foist their intentions upon the art. Seeing the Cage ArtCircus at the Guggenheim in Soho on a bright sunny day didn't detract one bit from the awesome array of work and it's changing visual tonality as the sun faded out.
Having seen the film of 101 in a theater setting, I can assure you that it's full of "dust on the print," hair in the trigger, overexposures and other "flaws" - that's actually the beauty of it.
Cage used the "imperfections" in a piece of paper to make a whole musicial score - a little imagination goes a LONG way.
