The sad truth is that the final decisions about the technologies we are encouraged or
even allowed to purchase have usually been made, not by artists or even engineers,
but by accountants and promoters who decide what new gear will make for the greatest
short term profit. From the earliest days of recording, amplification and modulation,
serious music has had to make do with the technology designed primarily to titilate
half-wits. A friend who used to service professional digital delay devices for some
of the biggest pop stars found that the slots for modifying the standard presets were
usually empty.
