Morton Feldman's "Two Pieces for String Quartet (1954)" and "For
String Quartet (1956)" as performed by the Rangzen Quartet (http://
netnewmusic.net/wiki/index.php?title=Rangzen_Quartet) will be
broadcast around 1am and then again around 12noon EST this Friday
June 16th (tomorrow) on Contemporary Classical Internet Radio (http://
contemporary-classical.com).

These new recordings are the result of a project initiated on the
"Why Patterns?" discussion list. "For Feldman" (http://www.amazon.com/
gp/product/B000F3T3PK) is second in a series featuring previously
unreleased works by emerging composers, this 96kHz|24bit Audio DVD
(plays in any DVD player) contains 4 world premiere recordings and
the only available release of 3 works by Morton Feldman. David
Beardsley's 30-minute 2004 string quartet in Just Intonation will
also be aired online, soon before the DVD is released.

THREE PIECES FOR STRING QUARTET from 1954-1956 is actually a pairing
of what originally were two separate works: TWO PIECES FOR STRING
QUARTET(1954) and FOR STRING QUARTET(1956). THREE PIECES occurs after
Morton Feldman's (1926-1987) first published work for string quartet,
STRUCTURES from 1951, and both were premiered together on May 30,
1956 by the Juilliard String Quartet. THREE PIECES was written during
a period dominated by a series of piano works, including PIANO PIECE
1955 and PIECE FOR FOUR PIANOS, and elements of indeterminacy were
important attributes of Feldman's music during this period. Coming in
the midst of several compositions for keyboard(s), Feldman appears to
have considered some of the fundamental differences between strings
and keyboards, such as the ability of string performers to utilize
different techniques of producing sound, such as pizzicato and
harmonics. THREE PIECES are, like STRUCTURES, an interesting portent
of what will be heard in the later works for string quartet. – David
Toub [with thanks to Ole Buck]

John Cage's "Inlets" (1977) as performed by Glenn Freeman will also
be heard during this broadcast. "Inlets" is soon to be released on an
Audio DVD which features Cage's complete scores for Sho and Conch
Shells. More information on OgreOgress productions can be found at
