you can alter it basically with any type of 
analog electronic processing device (ranging from 
guitar effect pedals to more elaborate - and 
expensive - contraptions like Sherman Filter Bank 
for instance)...in the 60s (cf. 
Stockhausen/Mantra) Ring Modulators were often 
used. It all depends on the type of alteration 
you're after. And I would think that nowadays it 
is much simpler, and cheaper to do this kind of 
job with a computer (you don't have to be a 
rocket scientist or millionaire to use a VST 
host, which will provide you with almost all 
possible effects). Is there a particular reason 
why you wouldn't want to use a computer?
In any case, digital or analog, you will need 
some good microphones to start with.
