Dear Joe

I think his recognition extends way beyond 'American musical culture and 
the life of music in general'.  On his birthday i flicked through parts 
of Silence which i hadn't looked at for a long time.  A holistic zest 
for life in all its fullness exudes from these pages. Sometimes thought 
provoking, wildly humourous, always stimulating.  My kids have no 
problem in responding to 4.33.  I think you should refer your professor 
to the mushroom story on p.272. (London: Marion Boyars, 2004 reprint).
