Hello,
I am working on an analysis of Music of Changes and am trying to
find as much as possible on the exact procedure used in its composition.

The strategy of the analysis is to create charts of thoughts
(instead of sounds) and then use I Ching chance procedures to procure
the connections between the thoughts. It is an attempt to understand
the music by writing. It seems to me that the cornerstones of
traditional analysis are ideas like "evidence" and "connection". The
purpose of such an analysis is to take collected thoughts both
original to the author and quoted from others, and synthesize them,
draw new conclusions by purposeful juxtaposition.
I cannot see how such concepts could be useful in connection to
a piece like Music of Changes whose form (continuity of events) is
removed from the processes of the Ego. So by recreating the chance
procedures used in the piece's composition, I hope to create an
analysis that is more relevant.
It is not an attempt to recreate the process by another means, but
very much an analysis. I am sending this email in an attempt to get
feedback on this concept. Does such a thing seem valuable? Are you
aware of any other similar projects I could benefit from? Mostly,
does anyone have any source materials from Music of Changes, such as
the charts themselves? Perhaps a detailed account of how the coins
were flipped to select elements from the various charts that were
used? Any discussion of the philosophy of this endeavor and the
underlying assumptions thereof would also be very appreciated. You
can email me directly at apzm94@umkc.edu.

Thanks,

Aaron Zimmerman
