just read this a couple of nights ago in "for the birds".
cage talks a bit about the process of HPSCHD and starting his work
with computers.

"when i received lejaren hiller's invitation to go to the university
of illinois to work with computers, i accepted immediately. i would
not have sought to use a computer left to my own devices, but when i
was offered the use of one, i wondered what i would actually be able
to get out of it. but at the same time, i had a strong desire to do
something with it...."

"i use it (computer) when it is at my disposal. previously, i didnt
use as many numbers as i do now. in fact, only since my work on
HPSCHD have i begun to use the i ching on a very large scale. i no
longer toss coins myself - the i ching has been computerized. i can
no picture working on a large number of hexagrams at once. in the
past i sometimes did need numbers, but my projects were a little less
ambitious. when i needed to toss coins for the composition of atlas
eclipticalis, i had to rely on the good will of the dancers of the
merce cunningham company, and i paid them for their work. that is no
longer necessary with the computer."

cage used the computer for his late number pieces too.

in fact, i think on the new mode DVD of one11, there is a section in
the making of the film with andrew culver explaining the use of the
computer in the compositional process. very interesting.
