The S.E.M. Ensemble¹s Reading of New Compositions was initiated in 1997 by a
major grant from the Greenwall Foundation. SEM has continued to produce
these workshops every season, focusing mainly on compositions for orchestra,
with the occasional inclusion of chamber music. The program is focused on
emerging composers, as well as more established composers who do not have
the opportunity to work with an orchestra. In the past, readings have
included works by Udo Kasemets, Phillip Mantione, Alvin Singleton, Rain
Worthington, Frances White, Alex Mincek, Henry Threadgill, Virgil
Moorefield, Akemi Naito, James Fei, Leroy Jekins, Roscoe Mitchell, Sinan
Sivaskan, Robin Haller, and Phill Niblock. During the week-long workshop,
each composer is given a chance over the course of several sessions to work
with the conductor and possibly modify his/her composition. The workshop
culminates in a public performance, recorded for the benefit of each
composer. Often, works initiated in these workshops are performed later at
concerts in New York and Europe.
Matthew Hough (b. 1981, New York City) attended Manhattan School of Music
and is a co-founder of the ensembles ³Zs² and ³Seductive Sprigs,² based in
New York. He attended the Ostrava Days 2005 Festival, along with Sarah
O¹Halloran (b. 1983, Ireland), who is currently a graduate student at Queens
University in Belfast. Charles Waters (b. 1969, Raleigh, North Carolina)
studied at Appalachian State University and plays saxophone and clarinet
with the Gold Sparkle Band. Matt Rogalsky (b. 1966, Nigeria) received his
Ph.D. in 2006 from City University in London. He teaches at Queen¹s
University in Ontario, and his music has been released on XI Records. G.
Douglas Barrett (b. 1981, Augusta, Georgia) is currently a Ph.D. candidate
at SUNY Buffalo, and he received his MFA from California Institute of the
Arts, where he studied with James Tenney and Christian Wolff. R. Chris
Dahlgren (b. 1961, New York City) received his MA from Wesleyan University,
and currently resides in Germany. He plays Contrabass, and has performed
with many famous improvisers, including Anthony Braxton and Art Lande.
Christian Wolff (born 1934, Nice, France) has lived in the United States
since 1941. He holds a doctorate in classics from Harvard, where he taught
until 1970. Although he has been closely associated with John Cage, David
Tudor and Morton Feldman, Wolff is basically self-taught as a composer. He
has received a number of commissions, was "Ford Composer" at Mills College
and was composer/lecturer at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik
in Darmstadt. He has written for numerous music periodicals, and has
organized and performed in concerts in Europe and the U.S.A.
The S.E.M. Ensemble is dedicated to the performance and advancement of new
music, with a focus on works that can best be described as post-Cagean.
Since its inception in 1970, SEM has collaborated with composers who also
often perform with the group. They have included, among others, Earle Brown,
John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros, Roscoe Mitchell,
and a score of other younger composers. SEM holds a yearly series of
concerts at the Paula Cooper Gallery along with concerts in such venues as
Merkin Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Zankel Hall
at Carnegie Hall, Tonic, The MOMA, and the New York Studio School.
This performance is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the
New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Music Fund,
Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the
Phaedrus Foundation, Robert Rauschenberg, Stephanie Bernheim, Noni Pratt,
Susan Sollins-Brown, Raymond J. Learsy, Molly Davies, Julian Lethbridge,
Elizabeth Enders, Richard Kuhns, Jerald Ordover and other private donations.
Special thanks to the Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz for his
support.
