Hi to all. A heads-up to any interested parties in
the western PA/eastern OH area --
During the first week of March, the Society for
American Music and the Music Library Association are
hosting a joint conference at the Hilton Pittsburgh
(600 Commonwealth Place). On Thursday, March 1st, at
9:00 a.m., the conference will feature a plenary
session on recently rediscovered/reconstructed pieces
by John Cage. The centerpiece of this session will
focus on the truly fascinating reconstruction of
"Chess PIeces" (1944), with a performance and
presentation by Margaret Leng Tan. Don Gillespie,
formerly of C.F. Peters, will discuss "Dance Music for
Elfrid Ide," which is about to be published by Peters.
In addition, I'll be giving a presentation on "Dance
to the West" (1942), a piece that I rediscovered a few
years ago, and which Cage wrote for the choreographer
Ruth Hatfield; Margaret Leng Tan and Rob Haskins will
perform this piece. Laura Kuhn of the John Cage Trust
will be featured on the panel as well, and David
Nicholls will be chairing the session.
Should be a lively morning!
-David P.
