Not only did Cage adjust the ³wing words² of mesostics according to
tastee.g. He pretty much did what he felt looked and sounded good, but in
the Jasper Johns mesostics (see Joan Retallack¹s book for the first one,
³Art is either a complaint...² he leaves out letters of the mesostic string
if they interfere with the plan, so for instance the ³x² of ³exercise² is
omitted because there were no words to put in the line horizontally that
contained an ³x²
Oulipo is certainly more rule-bound although there¹s the famous ³clinamen,²
the swerve away from the constraint at a moment of crisis, epiphany, etc.
