OSTRAVA DAYS 2007 FESTIVAL BEGINS ON AUGUST 26
7 DAYS / 15 EVENTS
ORCHESTRAS, ENSEMBLES & SOLOISTS PERFORM NEW WORKS BY RESIDENT COMPOSERS
ALONG WITH CONTEMPORARY CLASSICS
The festival is produced as a part of the biennial Ostrava Days Institute
(August 13-September 2), which includes classes, seminars, discussions and
roundtables.
"Ostrava Days is a working environment, not a school; young composers learn
through collaboration with their more experienced colleagues, rather than
being 'instructed'," says Petr Kotik, Artistic Director, Ostrava Days.
"Young and established composers work side-by-side during three weeks of
presentations, discussions, rehearsals and performances with professional
orchestras, ensembles and soloists. These conditions require efficiency,
clarity and maximum focus, providing an environment that sets itself apart
from academic and other educational institutions."
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS:
The Ostrava Days 2007 [New Music] Festival focuses on music independent of
both the mainstream music world and the academic environment. Although the
spotlight is on compositions created within the last few years, including
many world premieres, there will also be plenty of works from the second
half of the 20th Century. Several major productions will be presented,
including the opera Neither by Morton Feldman with the libretto by Samuel
Beckett, Wu (an hour-long piano piece) by Rudolf Komorous, symphonic works
by Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Galina Ustvolskaya, a violin concerto by
György Ligeti and Concert for Piano and Orchestra by John Cage in a version
with two soloists and two orchestras. Along with these masterpieces, the
program will also include 26 compositions by the resident-students of
Ostrava Days [6 works are for orchestra]. This year, the Ostrava Days
Institute has accepted 36 students from 14 countries, including Brazil,
Macedonia and New Zealand, not to mention the large number of students from
the USA and UK.
Please see detailed program information below, including the full list of
all participants.
LOCATION:
Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic (population
350,000). Since the mid-19th Century, it has been one of the most important
industrial centers in Central Europe with steel mills, coalmines and other
heavy industry plants. Despite its blue-collar character, Ostrava has one of
the country's best symphony orchestras, the 116-piece Janacek Philharmonic,
housed in the largest cultural complex in the country. It also has a newly
built conservatory, a repertory opera house (which recently produced
Debussy's Peleas and Melissande) and a very lively theater and performing
arts scene. The city is located midway between Prague and Warsaw.
******
Ostrava Days 2007 is produced under the patronage of Petr Kajnar, Mayor of
Ostrava, and Evzen Tosenovsky, President of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
