hi
i am unaware of any comment by cage on messiaen. but my knowledge on
this topic is far from complete.

messaien was not as comfortable with 'sound as sound' as cage was. for
instance, he brought non-musical sounds into his music [birdsong] by
notating them for a wind ensemble. cage just opened up the listening
'canvas' and if a bird happened to be singing, well that was
wonderful.
i think messaien was much more interested in control than cage was.
and messaien was more facile with the traditional eurpoean classical
music than cage ever was [taught at the paris conservatoire].
i just don't see cage becoming obsessed with modes [or rhythms] of
limited transposition in same was that messaien was.
an excellent question- i don't seem to have an answer though ...
