The lire/dollars exchange rate was pegged at $1=625 lire under the Bretton 
Woods agreement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_System) from 
1949 until 1971.  So 5M lire was worth $8000, which inflation since then 
has converted (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/) to something in the 
$55,000 range, not $500,000.
