I apologize, I forgot to some division in my rough calculation. 
However,  if you compare 5M of 1958 with the corresponding amount in 
2001 (in lire), you will have approximately 430M, that is much more than 
$55000 (that is the sum you would have if you changed lire in dollars in 
1958 and made it grow up with dollar's inflation). This calculation is 
based on the purchasing power of a public employed's salary.
About Berio and his "aid" to Cage, he was often at the Studio di 
Fonologia della RAI di Milano in those years, but I don't think he could 
be yet so powerful (as he would have been ten years later) to organize 
such a thing...
