(Reading this over before sending suggested to me that most readers
would get so bored by the first part that they might not get to the
"find" that I offer, that no one else seemingly has. So the impatient
among you might drop down to the two asterisks (**) below)
Sorry I'm not right on the heels of the recent questions and answers
about the Silence archives, but I think I have in my archives some
things not yet recovered. First I'll sum up who has what so far as I
can tell from recent messages and web sources.
The Greg Davis collection which is now on the Bend of Bay site covers
Vol 1 number 01, December of 1994 to Vol number 299, Sept. of 1999.
A couple of months ago here on Silence, Josh Ronsen noted the New
Albion archives covering Aug to Dec of 2002.
And we have the current archives covering December 2002 to the present
at the site mentioned after each message here.
I recall one message recently asked about the period of August to
December in 1999, and don't recall anyone replying to that.
In spite of my propensity for disorder when it comes to things like
desks, I kept all the Digests from the time I joined the list in
February of 95. (I also read the regular list messages.) And after
the confusion of changing to Virginia as host, when the present system
of archive availability was ready, I kept and keep the monthly
archives.
So, in short, I have everything except the period between Volume 1
Number 397 (August 2002) and the monthly archive's beginning at the
very end of December 2002.
Oh, yes. I have one thing more. Not ranking among the great
archeological finds of all time, I do have a file not previously
mentioned in the recent correspondence.
The first messages were handled by the MajorDomo at BGA.com. I'm not
giving away anything by saying that the majordomo was/is not human. It
is a machine which thinks like a machine (or a programmer?) And it
thinks that things begin at zero.
**
So while all the available sources of the first years of Silence begin
with Volume 1 number 1, the majordomo began with Volume 1 number 0.\
I have it.
It begins with (I guess) test messages from Joe Zitt and others, from
November 28 of 94 to December 13 of the same year. Then came number
1.
From skimming it over, nothing earth-shattering or calling for
congressionl investigation, but I suppose a scholar might enjoy it for
scholarly reasons.
Anyone want it? I have it in Wordperfect, but of course it can be
transformed.
