[silence] When Morty met John...?

Hello all

The popularly accepted date of when Feldman first met Cage is January 26
or 27 1950 at Carnegie Hall, after the Webern op.21 under Mitropolous.

However in a 1983 interview with Thomas Moore,
reprinted in 'Morton Feldman Says'
(p181), Feldman says

"But the most significant composer that I knew was my teacher, Stefan
Wolpe. It was actually through Wolpe that I met Cage. To some degree,
though, I met him later in a more glamorous context."

And in an interview with Austin Clarkson in the same book (p. 98) we read:

MF:"...It was the first time I ever saw Cage, before actually meeting
him, was at a music ... Irma and Stefan out at Cathedral Parkway had
these soirées, which was very exciting for me, a young composer across
the River..."

Here, Feldman is referring to David Tudor's
involvement with the Wolpes (he studied with
both). As far as I'm aware, Tudor didn't meet
Cage until 1949 (?) and the Wolpes were divorced
the same year, so presumably Feldman is referring
to seeing (but not actually meeting?)
Cage at such a soirée in 1949, as it was apparently Tudor who first invited
Cage to these evenings.

Given Feldman's gifts as a raconteur and his love
of anecdotes it seems scarcely believable that he
wouldn't have made a lot more out of it if he and
Cage had met then, even if they only exchanged
pleasantries, but perhaps the "glamour" of the
post-Webern meeting of minds at Carnegie Hall won
out.

Does anyone have any further information about this?

Cheers

Jim
