Ok, but if you're seeking audience reactions to a Riley piece, why  
not write to Riley??? People always used to ask things about  
Stockhausen's music when he was still alive, and I always used to  
refer them the Man himself. They were never disappointed, always got  
an answer. Riley lives. Get in touch!!! And yes, Pauline and Terry  
are lifetime friends! People tend to overlook the obvious!

With regard to Riley's "In C":  According to Pauline Oliveros's book,
SOFTWARE FOR PEOPLE (Baltimore, MD:  Smith Publications, 1984), p. 197,
the premiere of Terry Riley's "In C" was in 1965 at the San Francisco
Tape Music Center.  Oliveros (in SOFTWARE) also makes a brief allusion
to "In C" in a dream journal, dated Feb. 3, 1972, but it is not a
"factual account."  Instead, Oliveros relates the work to "a flock of
migrating birds in flight"  (page 72).

Pauline Oliveros was one of the founders (and a director) of the SFTMC.

Incidentally, I believe Oliveros and Riley are friends, so this might
lead to other sources of information.  For example, I would not be
surprised if other members of the SFTMC (Don Buchla, Morton Subotnick,
Ramon Sendar) might not have other avenues for you to research.

You might also contact Professor David Bernstein at Mills College.  He
is publishing a book titled:

The San Francisco Tape Music Center: 1960s Counterculture and the
Avant-Garde (University of California Press and Experimental Media and
Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
forthcoming July 2008).

Also, Mills College (I believe) has archival materials about the SFTMC.
   This is owing to the fact that Oliveros taught at Mills for many  
years.

Also, I was wondering if you already had found the LP recording from
Columbia Records Stereo MS 7178 of "In C."   The jacket notes, written
by Paul Williams, describes the experience of listening to the piece.

Hello,

Im currently doing a University study in the UK based on the New  
Music's of the early 50's - late 60's, featuring Cage, Stockhausen,  
Riley, Young etc. Some of you may remember me from before when i  
posted my online survey of this study, and i'm very thankful to all  
those that helped me!

I'm posting another message this time, as i am finding it very  
difficult to come across Audience reactions to compositions at the  
time they first came out from this period.

Obviously, there is much information on Cage's 4"33 piece and from  
when he first performed it in 1952 at Woodstock, New York, but i'm  
trying to look for Audience reactions to Stockhausen's - Gesang der J? 
nglinge, and Terry Riley's - In C in particular, but generally any  
composition from this time that has information on Audience reactions  
will do.

Please email me any websites, journals, or books that you know of  
that could have this information.


I'll be very greatful for any replies!
