This coming Thursday, April 24th at 8 P.M., the University of Northern Iowa tuba ensemble UNITUBA will be giving a concert of 20th century works, one of which is John Cage's "Atlas Eclipticalis". Along with Cage, we are also performing pieces by composers Greg Shapley, Patrick Schulz, Eric Ewazen (a wild, out-of-the-ordinary piece by him called "Devil Septet"), and UNI students Marc Wigim and Aaron Hynds. The performance is being held in Davis Hall at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, in Cedar Falls, IA.
Along with the performance itself, this concert is also being broadcast live via webcast. All that's required is the free RealPlayer program, and you just have to click on the following link a couple of minutes before showtime, (it should start broadcasting roughly 30 minutes before the show starts.) If the link doesn't work, then copy and paste the URL into your browser.

To be honest, this performance of "Atlas..." isn't entirely "true" in terms of following the score word for word. We are stretching the score instructions a little, so it is not a definitive performance. However, it still should be a blast. We are using the three tuba parts written by Cage, and have 4 of the other tuba players acting as the conductor/clocks. All in all, it should a fun and interesting performance of a great piece.
