Hey everyone,
I was wondering how John was able to create the "subtractions" for the
harmonies for Apartment House 1776. Did he use I Ching chance operations, or
did he simply elongate or shorten the notes of the hymn tunes as he pleased?
Another question: in regards to actually playing both Quartets I-VIII and
the supplementary material from Apartment House 1776, is it sent it
conventional notation (that is, is it actually written out in parts that
follow the rhythmic structure)? Is it possible, as The Arditti Quartet did,
to arrange the supplementary material from Apartment House 1776 to fit other
instruments as well? I have a feeling Cage would have applied the
indeterminacy of instrumentation rule to this piece as well.
What are the Tunes? So far I've only heard of drum cadences, the 44
Harmonies, and the two Imitations.
Any clarification as to the subject would be most welcome
JG

Error is simply the inability to transition from a preconception to an
actuality. There are no mistakes.
