Sun Ra is in some ways not all that avant-garde: his roots are very deep 
in the popular music of the swing era, even though his head was way out 
in orbit somewhere past Neptune :-)  In fact sometimes (perhaps when he 
sensed he had a particularly pretentious audience on his hands), he 
would do a whole set or even multiple sets of fairly conventional 
mainstream jazz.
