ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS FOR PIANO AND RECORDINGS
Thursday, December 4, 1:00 PM
Levensen Hall at Brooklyn College
Questions and Answers (2007)
for Piano and Recordings
Each of the six parts is a question and answer from John Cage's Q&A session
at Harvard University, following his readings there in 1989 for the Norton
Chair Lectures. The piano part is based on the speech rhythms and exaggerated
pitch contours of Cage and his questioners.
1. Was It a Joke?
2. Empty Paintings
3. Hunting for Mushrooms
4. A Clam Went Up
5. Do Something for Music
6. Freedom from Memory
Three Etudes (2008)
1. Panic
The Great God Pan. Clusters. Stomping.
2. Crossing
A slow melody in low register is repeated in middle and high registers,
each time transposed up a half-step. Meanwhile, cartoon
birdsongs go the opposite direction.
3. Chopin
Chopin finds a parallel universe where G Major and G-flat Major are the
same key
Signalling with Light (2001)
Coded messages in overlapping rhythmic patterns, close up and far away
Marc Thorman studied composition with Charles Dodge and David del Tredici and
piano with Michael Rodgers at City University of New York. He graduated with
a doctoral degree in music composition from CUNY in 2002, and has taught at
CUNY colleges and other New York music institutions since 1994. Professor
Thorman's works on text and speech in Cage's compositions earned the Barry Brook
Award for outstanding doctoral dissertation, and he has published articles on
Cage's work in this area. Prof. Thorman was awarded a scholarship to study
computer music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, received a commission
from Meet the Composer for a children's opera, and was twice the recipient of
