This is depressing. I interviewed him about 20 years ago for KPFA, and have
presented some of his recorded music occasionally on the radio. He was a
strange person. (Some one used "bizarre" once, in French). But his music was
quite exacting. In our interview (I wonder if I can find it) he seemed very
taken by the fact that we were born on the same day (Jan 6 in NYC would have
been Jan 7 in Europe), but two years earlier. This seemed to create a sort
of bond between us in his mind that somehow escaped me. Perhaps something
lost in translation. His English was not that good, and my French
embarrassingly poor.

Over the years he did manage to send me (or have his publisher send me) new
recordings of his work, which always impressed me in their extra-musical
construction ... details that without explanation would certainly not be
perceived merely by listening.

Clearly, his ears were indeed larger than anyone else's.

This is sad, because he never got the recognition he sought. The reason I
was able to interview him so long ago was that he had been sent to San
Francisco to try to convince the S.F. Symphony to play his music. That
mission failed.

Extremely sad.
