Regarding the composers who utilize silence in a significant manner, there is a " Concerto for Conductor without Orchestra," by the American composer Francis Schwartz that was premiered at Napa Valley College in 2005. On that occasion the conductor and music department chairman Dr. Roberto-Juan Gonzalez executed the work to considerable public enthusiasm. Imagine a conductor in tails in front of the public without an orchestra going through the tics and techniques of 'maestros' at work. Now THAT'S an ego trip! And you don't have to spar with the string section. It's a lot of fun.

This isn't wholly original, though - Dieter Schnebel wrote a piece for solo conductor in 1962, his Nostalgie (Modelle No. 1), an elaborately choreographed theatrical work in part parodying various conducting styles as well as placing the performer in various sometimes extreme or disturbed-seeming physical and mental states (it also has an optional tape part in which a series of tiny fragments from the standard repertoire are heard at minimal volume at a few points during the piece).
