[silence] Young Cage

Hi Stefano and others,
If you visit Paul van Emmerik's Cage site (http://www.xs4all.nl/~cagecomp/), you can take a look at his 'Cage chronology', which might give you some brief details of his early life (for instance: Around 1924 Cage played Beethoven Violin Sonatas with an unidentified violin player. Just imagine!).
Another option is reading the article by Thomas S. Hines "The Not Yet Cage: The Los Angeles Years, 1912-1938" in 'John Cage - Composed in America' edited by Marjorie Perloff and Charles Junkerman. I remember reading an article criticizing Hines' essay, partly because it focuses quite a bit on Cage's homosexuality. If I remember correctly the author of this article even doubted whether the interview took place at all. This might be in Kostelanetz' book 'Cage (ex)plained', I am not sure about this and have no access to my books at the moment.
Good luck and best wishes,
André Chaudron

Hi there, sorry if this sounds a bit silly but I was wondering if there
are any news available of John Cage's childhood....his first 20 years,
let's say. I'd like to understand the birth of John's maverick spirit.
The causes and the environment that produced such personality and ideas.
Any clues? Books or links on the web I could have a glance at?

Thanks in advance

Stefano
