hi Ben, the first mesostic was written for Edwin Denby, in 1963, but it was
not in the mesostic format with the name running down the middle. The text is
published in Richard Kostelanetz's book, entitled John Cage. The first two
lines are:
rEmembering a Kay i visited you
seems noW as I write that the weather thaN was warm
The mesostic format began in 1969, as far as I am aware, with the mesostic to
Syvilla Fort, published in Cage's book Empty Words. The 62 Mesostics Re Merce
Cunningham are from 1970.
