Dear Troplisters,

We are experiencing excessive froglet mortality in our trop culture,
occurring approximately from stage 63 to 2 weeks post-metamorphosis. Has
anyone seen a similar case?

I'm suspicious of a fungal infection. We house X. laevis in a nearby lab
and try to minimize contact between the species, but we have some traffic
between the rooms (e.g., staff and occasionally tadpole food). We brought
unaffected froglets (about 2 weeks post-MM) into the room where the
froglets were dying and treated half with formalin and malachite green.
The treated froglets survived, and those left untreated died.

We use bleach and 70% ethanol to sterilize equipment, but are fearful of
this infection spreading. I am very appreciative of any advice or
information offered.

Many thanks for your time,

Laura Peterson
